Boing Boing: DIY Impeachment
Evidently, we can initiate the impeachment of W. Bush ourselves--without having to first convince enough of those weasels in Congress to roll that ball! You better believe I'm in:
Jodin Morey says:
Impeach Bush yourself! This is much more than just a petition.
There's a little known and rarely used clause of the in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process.
That's where we come in. In addition to the State-by-State method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.
You can initiate the impeachment process yourself by downloading the memorial, filling in the relevant information in the blanks (your name, state, etc.), and sending it in.
More information on the precedent for submitting an impeachment memorial, and the House Rules on this procedure, can also be found at the above address.
If you have any doubts that Bush has committed crimes warranting impeachment, read this page.
If you're concerned that impeachment might not be the best strategy at this point, read the bottom of this page.

Is washing one's hands overrated?
Initially this freaks me out. I almost decide that I totally dislike a person when I discover something like this--it's such a basic thing that we all should do. Sometimes though, as I think about it, I realize that I don't know whether other acquaintances wash at the appropriate times or not. Ignorance, on my part, is. . .almost. . .bliss. Other times, I think about the actual consequences. I think of the point of actually washing my hands regularly--not just to clean up after my own mess, but to be wary of others' messes. So, in that light, it probably makes no difference what other people do with their hands. I should keep my hands clean and out of my eyes, mouth and other orifices unless I know very well that I've just washed.
It's still gross.

Gotta love our hipocracy!
This Wiccan soldier dies in Afghanistan and the military won't put his religious symbol on his plaque. His faith is "unrecognized."
My wife made an interesting point--if so many religious folks want more religion in schools, we should give it to them--Wicca, Satanism, Budhism, Islam etc.

Will Steve Jobs Be Disney's Big Cheese?
Who cares? Google cares!
". . .here's a short review of the findings of a recent study by J. A. Iestra that appears in a 2005 issue of the journal Circulation. It's called "Effect Size Estimates of Lifestyle and Dietary Changes on All Cause Mortality in Coronary Artery Disease Patients." Iestra's data showed notable reductions in coronary artery disease -- and mortality -- when patients make these changes:
- Diet change: 40-45%
- Smoking cessation: 35-50%
- ACE inhibitors (for blood pressure): 26%
- More physical activity: 20-30%
- Beta blockers (for blood pressure): 23%
- Statins (for cholesterol): 21%
- Aspirin: 18%
- Moderate alcohol: 14-20%

Doctors: OTC Cough Syrups Not Effective - Yahoo! News
I'd say this was just a way for doctors to get more patients ($$) in their offices, but they don't recommend a visit unless a cough lasts more than 3 weeks.
I just had a cold during the Holiday season. It was never horrible, but the symptoms were persistent and moved around to different areas--it started with a mild sore throat, then it became a cough, then it became sinus congestion with lot's of sneazing. Especially when these symptoms don't include feeling weak and sick to the stomach, I tend to take lots of fluids, maybe a little decongestant so I can breath (and hopefully stave off a terrible infection) and let the thing take it's course. Another friend suggested that the sort of symptoms I described are usually exactly the type to be wiped out easily with some antibiotics. I've always found that my symptoms never go away any sooner when I am on doctor's orders compared to just letting it ride it's course. In this case, it seemed to go away in just under two weeks without a doctors visit, prescriptions or even any days off of work. I guess I subscribe to the idea that antibiotics are over prescribed.
