Doctors: OTC Cough Syrups Not Effective - Yahoo! News
I'd say this was just a way for doctors to get more patients ($$) in their offices, but they don't recommend a visit unless a cough lasts more than 3 weeks.
I just had a cold during the Holiday season. It was never horrible, but the symptoms were persistent and moved around to different areas--it started with a mild sore throat, then it became a cough, then it became sinus congestion with lot's of sneazing. Especially when these symptoms don't include feeling weak and sick to the stomach, I tend to take lots of fluids, maybe a little decongestant so I can breath (and hopefully stave off a terrible infection) and let the thing take it's course. Another friend suggested that the sort of symptoms I described are usually exactly the type to be wiped out easily with some antibiotics. I've always found that my symptoms never go away any sooner when I am on doctor's orders compared to just letting it ride it's course. In this case, it seemed to go away in just under two weeks without a doctors visit, prescriptions or even any days off of work. I guess I subscribe to the idea that antibiotics are over prescribed.
